What is expressive arts?
Expressive arts is for anyone who wishes to be in touch with one's innate creativity and using that creativity in every aspects of life in order to widen up the possibility of living life to its fuller sense.
Art making is naturally a powerful way to discover oneself and share one's stories through images. This therapeutic experience of art making often illuminates one's inner-world which is otherwise less accessible with ordinary daily languages. When it is done in a safe and supportive environment with the accompaniment of trained therapist, it can be enhanced to open up one's insight and a way toward new possibility facing life challenges.
Expressive arts provide a unique approach through all modalities of art :
- story-telling
- poetry
- music/voice
- dance/movement
- visual arts
- drama
Typical expressive arts sessions are done inter-modally, moving into different modalities of art following one's impulses and needs. Expressive arts therapy is a psychotherapy in a combination of talk therapy and expressive arts technique.
- work-centered : focusing on art making itself.
- therapy-centered: focusing on one's therapeutic process through art making.
One does not need to be a trained artist or have a previous experience in art making. The main principle of expressive arts is "low-skill, high-sensitivity". It is not to disregard the importance of techniques in art making but rather to emphasize the importance of one's sensitivity which makes one a true artist. This principle encourages one to be in touch with one's innate artist overcoming the fear of "being good or bad" when trying new things. The sessions are usually flowing spontaneously according to the participant's state of the moment and full of surprises to be witnessed.
It is for all walks and stages of one's life and one's mental and physical abilities.
